Job Description

Processors convert the raw product into a processed, marketable product. They sort fish, tend and operate header machines, inspect the products, load and unload plate freezers, weigh, package and label the product, and load/unload the product and other supplies on/off the ship. They clean the factory area on a regular basis and perform other work as directed. Processors may work in any of a number of areas of the vessel including the factory, the freezer hold, on the back deck, or on adjoining docks or vessels during offloads and backloads.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operate conveyor belt systems to regulate the movement or flow of fish to the header machines.
  • Sort fish by size, species and condition.
  • Discard incidental fish and fish that cannot be processed by the header machine.
  • Ensure the fish are correctly placed by predetermined size into the slots of a moving conveyor in a specific position for processing at a rate of 120 fish/minute which then prepares the fish to be headed, cut, skin and slice the fish.
  • Inspect the product to ensure that it conforms to established quality contract guidelines by inspecting for parasites and other defects.
  • Weigh fillets or processed fish product and place into pans to ensure that it meets specific weight and appearance to quality control standards.
  • Place freezer pans or trays holding bulk fish, or fish products such as H&G product or fillets, into plate freezers which extend from floor level to above eye level for freezer.
  • Pull freezer trays with frozen product from the plate freezer by hand or the use of a work aid and physically separate the product from the freezer pan by hitting it against an immovable object.
  • Operate a series of controls which move plate freezers.
  • Place frozen wrapped product into bags.
  • Manually place the bagged or packaged product onto a conveyor belt, pallet or elevator after sealing or hand taping for storage in the freezer hold area.
  • Store the finished product in a freezer hold according to type of product in a predetermined sequence.
  • Move the various packed and frozen product stacked in the freezer hold by conveyor or by hand onto pallets or nets for transfer by a hoist system onto the dock.
  • Clean all equipment on a daily basis or after each production run within the factory.
  • Assist factory engineering personnel in maintaining, repairing, replacing or installing factory equipment.

COMBI:

  • Perform any specific duties described in the Processor job description and as directed or required may also perform the tasks described under specific duties in the Deckhand job descriptions.  
  • Assist with attaching nets, slings, hooks and other devises to cables, forms and hoists in support of fishing operations
  • Load and unload equipment and supplies by hand or with hoist equipment.
  • Assists Deckhands and Bosuns in performing their respective duties.
  • Assist as part of the “fire team” as required or needed

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 2+ years commercial fishing OR
  • 1+ year of experience performing physical work

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of factory trawler operations and conditions preferred.
  • Must be capable of lifting up to 65 lbs. repetitively
  • Must be able to work in a cold and wet environment for extended period of time
  • Must be capable of boarding and exiting a vessel without assistance by climbing up or down gangplank, or by using a Jacob’s ladder.
  • Must be capable of understanding and following specific English written, oral and visual directions and instructions in the event of emergency.
  • Must climb or descend one or more set of steep stairs or vertical ladders both inside and outside in all weather conditions.
  • Must assist in all loading and unloading operations at the start and end of all the trips.
  • Must assist other departments including deckhands, engineers, galley staff, technicians and officers as directed at any time in the performance of their respective duties.
  • Must assist in all daily cleaning of the factory processing area and any other area as directed using shovels, buckets, brooms and pressure hoses.
  • Must be able to perform specific duties at any time of the day or night for extended periods of time in all weather conditions.
  • Must adhere to all safety and quality policies and regulations of the vessel and company. 
  • Must be able to share room assignments and bathroom facilities and eat in common dining areas with other crew
  • Must be capable of working and living on board a vessel for extended periods of time; up to 65 days without having access to immediate medical assistance except for first aid.
