Position Overview

The Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery is seeking to hire an independent, highly organized, and detail-oriented licensed Registered Nurse for the Chicago-Read Mental Health Center located in Chicago, Illinois. This position will be responsible for performing direct nursing care for people with mental illness on multiple units on an assigned shift. The successful candidate shall demonstrate a valid Illinois License and good oral and written communication skills, be a self-starter, and be able to carry out nursing assignments pursuant to the direction of medical personnel.

 

Essential Functions

  • Serves as a charge nurse.
  • Monitors nursing coverage for multiple units on shift and oncoming shift.
  • Prepares shift report for nursing director.
  • Responds to community hospital emergency room and police calls regarding patient placement and obtains patient information.
  • Identifies areas for quality assessment and improvement of activities.
  • Reviews all patient injury reports and/or census sheets.
  • Responds immediately to all emergency calls regarding staffing, medical emergencies and patient or staff needing hospital attention.
  • Participates in orientation of staff, on and assigned shift, regarding new policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires (a) graduation from an approved nursing education program resulting in an associate or diploma degree in nursing and two (2) years of progressively responsible professional nursing experience OR (b) a bachelor’s degree in nursing and one (1) year of professional nursing experience OR (c) a master’s degree in nursing. 
  • Requires licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Illinois.

 

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires the ability to work after business hours, weekends and holidays on a rotation basis.
  • Requires the ability to serve on an on-call basis.
  • Requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted.
  • Requires the ability to acquire and maintain Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate.
  • Requires the ability to physically restrain patients as necessary to prevent injury to patient or others.
  • Requires the ability to utilize office equipment, including personal computers and basic computer skills. 
  • Requires the ability to travel in the performance of job duties.
  • Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
  • Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.
