Job Description

The City of Naperville seeks a full-time Animal Control Officer. The Animal Control Unit is a part of the Naperville Police Department’s Patrol Division. This is a union, shift position; with the expected shift being an afternoon/evening shift (determined per seniority) and will work 5 consecutive days to include working weekends and holidays, and emergency call outs.

Duties

The Animal Control Officer (ACO) will be responsible for investigating a variety of complaints regarding animals and capturing, transporting and relocating wildlife as required. Additionally, the ACO will perform proper sanitation and maintenance of the animal retention facility and the animals housed, administer medication for the animals housed, and provide shelter enrichment for animals. This position acts as a customer service contact and will collect fees and perform office administration tasks, as necessary. The ACO will also participate in educational programs for the public and advise residents on wildlife problems.

Qualifications

A high school diploma or equivalent is required, as is one to three years’ experience in the care of handling animals and in animal behavior (preferred candidates will have 2-4 years’ experience in a similar role). You must possess more than just an interest in animals! Preferred candidates will possess an Associate’s degree in an animal-related field; experience as a veterinary technician is also a preferred qualification. Valid Illinois Class D Driver’s License is required. Humane euthanasia license is required within one year of hire. Strong communication skills and customer service skills are a must.
